 Press Releases

  • Washington D.C — Jan. 23, 2024 — Star Lab Corp®, a global leader in delivering technology protection software for mission-critical systems, today announced the release of Titanium for KVM, its response to the growing need for an easily implemented security solution for Kernel-based Virtual Machines (KVM). The culmination of a multi-year effort, this solution extends Star Lab’s Titanium Technology Protection capabilities to support the KVM host, an open-source virtualization technology that turns Linux into a hypervisor.

Developed in response to the growing use of virtualization in industrial and defense systems in the United States, including increasing adoption of KVM in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) systems, Titanium for KVM extends Titanium Technology Protection capabilities to provide safety and security for this critical component in the system stack. Star Lab's Titanium Technology Protection is a comprehensive technology protection solution for Linux-based mission-critical systems in Aerospace and Defense, that counters cyber and technology protection threats with capabilities including secure boot, data-at-rest protections, mandatory access controls, kernel hardening, and now, security for KVM-based virtualization.

Star Lab first announced its effort to develop a security solution for KVM in October 2022, stating at the time:

“...a shake-up in the virtualization market has been under way since before 2020. KVM has unseated Xen as the most popular and best-supported open-source virtualization solution on the market...And while VMware still maintains a large market share due to its ease of use, its proprietary closed-source business model limits any real efforts to achieve strong technology protection effects.”

Just over a year later, continued industry shifts in the hypervisor space further demonstrate the criticality of this capability for KVM.

“I’m thrilled to announce this release,” said Adam Fraser, Chief Operating Officer at Star Lab Corp, “but I’m even more excited by the feedback we’ve received from lighthouse customers and other stakeholders. Virtualization is widely used in Aerospace and Defense, with an ever-present need to secure it, and various vendors competing in the market. But Titanium for KVM will be the only solution that enables defense programs to realize the benefits of virtualization while also becoming FMS-ready. We are confident programs will enthusiastically embrace the cost-savings and risk reduction that comes with Titanium for KVM."
