In his role as President and CEO of Hanwha Defense USA, Michael Coulter focuses on shaping Hanwha’s strategic direction in the world’s largest aerospace market, enhancing the company’s innovation portfolio, and fostering Hanwha’s partnerships and growth in the United States, spanning both the shipbuilding and defense sectors.

He is also an Executive Director of Hanwha Aerospace, and Chairman of the Hanwha Defense USA Board of Directors.

Coulter previously served as President and Global CEO of Hanwha Aerospace and Hanwha Global Defense, where he led the global defense business of Hanwha Aerospace, Hanwha Systems and Hanwha Ocean, spearheading the company’s global expansion and evolution into a multi-domestic aerospace leader.

Prior to joining Hanwha, Coulter held key leadership roles in the defense industry, driving growth and managing global operations. He was the SVP of Business Development, and the President, International, of Leonardo DRS Technologies for over 10 years.

In public service, he served in senior positions in international security and strategy, leading initiatives to strengthen defense relationships and managing security cooperation programs at the U.S. Department of Defense as Principal Deputy for Strategic Plans and Policy / Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, and at the U.S. Department of State as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs.

As a U.S. Navy officer, Coulter served multiple combat tours and commanded at multiple levels, gaining invaluable experience in leadership, risk management and operational strategy, which continue to inform his approach at Hanwha.

Michael Coulter holds an MBA from Georgetown University, an MA in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College, and a BA in Political Science from the University of Maryland.
