Defense contractor supplied fiber-optic network solutions and infrastructure for greater security and cost-effective lifecycle management in support of global warfighters
ATLANTA, Ga. Feb. 23, 2017 – Envistacom today announced that it was part of the technology and IT systems engineering team that deployed the communications networks and supporting infrastructure for the Defense Information Systems Agency’s (DISA) state-of-the-art complex at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. DISA Global Operations Command opened the 164,000-square-foot facility, including the largest cyber operations center with the Department of Defense (DoD), in August 2016 to provide mission support and emergency-response coordination for warfighters around the globe.
Envistacom was responsible for the design, installation, configuration and testing of three communications networks for the DISA facility, including its passive optical local area network (OLAN), based on a combination of Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) and advanced Ethernet technologies. Optical LAN is a high-bandwidth, fiber-optic network that provides greater speed and security than copper for voice, video and data transmissions. This type of network also is more energy-efficient and less expensive to install and operate, requiring fewer components while being easy to upgrade, expand or adapt. Vulnerability points can be removed, while lowering total cost of ownership.
“Envistacom is proud to have been part of the team that supplied DISA Global Operations Command with it advanced communications networks, including the first OLAN deployed by DISA, to support national security,” says Tom Proctor, vice president of operations for Envistacom. “We appreciate the opportunity to contribute our expertise in network design, engineering and cybersecurity to defend the nation, equipping our warfighters with the modern tools they need to accomplish their missions.”
The company worked with Tellabs to source the components used in DISA Global’s OLAN, as well as the other two LANs Envistacom engineered for this facility. The networks provide more than 3,000 end points and more than 1 terabyte of throughput.
“We are pleased that Tellabs Optical LAN is part of the technology infrastructure for this amazing DoD facility, delivering greater security and scalability.” said Mike Dagenais, Tellabs president and CEO. “Optical LAN converges multiple IT network services and multiple classifications, such as NIPR, SIPR and JWICS, over a single more flexible, scalable and cost-effective, fiber-based architecture that is highly secure.”
