Profile

Commander Matthew Hoekstra is a native of Battle Creek, MI. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Communications Studies, and was commissioned as an ensign in May 2000 after completion of Officer Candidate School. His division officer assignments were as Main Propulsion Division Officer, Combat Information Center Officer, and Assistant Operations Officer in USS SHILOH (CG 67) in San Diego, CA. Following SWOS Department Head school, he was assigned as Operations Officer onboard US STETHEM (DDG 63) in Yokosuka, Japan and then again as Operations Officer onboard USS PORT ROYAL (CG 73) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and as Damage Control Assistant in USS MAKIN ISLAND (LHD 8). His staff tours include Assistant Surface Operations Officer for Carrier Strike Group Eleven, Staff Planning and Liaison Officer to the Commanding General, I Marine Expeditionary Force.
CDR Hoekstra’s military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various campaign and unit awards, including five Battle “E” awards.
