Description
Today’s critical infrastructure must defend against a diverse and evolving threat landscape. With new technologies that pose an increased potential for harm against our nation’s security, reliance on existing compliance processes is insufficient. To optimize cybersecurity solutions, particularly in a highly interconnected networking environment, Systems Security Engineering (SSE) provides an Engineering mission-first approach to constructing a cyber-resilient architecture.
Systems Security Engineering delivers systems engineering rigor to develop trustworthy systems that satisfy stakeholder requirements within their established risk tolerance. This emerging approach has the power to transform security across the federal space beginning with mission needs and using strategic, risk-informed, tailored processes to enhance our nation’s cybersecurity posture. Treating cybersecurity as a critical risk, it must be incorporated early into the system development lifecycle. Doing so creates more effective and efficient processes while facilitating future testing and development.
Proactive security and cyber resiliency are critical components of a robust cybersecurity strategy. Together, these approaches create a comprehensive defense mechanism that not only mitigates potential threats but also ensures rapid recovery and continuity of operations in the face of cyber adversities. The learning objective of this panel is to understand how to effectively incorporate security into the modeling, architecting, designing, testing, and maintenance of network systems. SSE applications for the defense community, including how to approach unique mission characteristics, will be included in this discussion. This SSE approach incorporates NIST SP 800-160 principles.
