Lieutenant Artem Sherbinin was born in Kyiv, Ukraine. He immigrated to the United States in 2001, and settled with his parents in Pittsburgh, PA. He is a native Russian speaker.
Artem graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a B.S. in Political Science, and commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer in May 2018. He was selected as a Navy VGEP Scholar and attended Georgetown University, which he graduated in December 2018 with an M.A. in U.S. National Security Policy.
At sea, Artem served onboard USS RAFAEL PERALTA (DDG 115) as the Surface Action Officer and Main Propulsion Officer. He took RAFAEL PERALTA through two deployments in the Western Pacific, and coordinated a homeport shift to Yokosuka, Japan. He then served as the final Navigator onboard USS BUNKER HILL (CG 52) before her decommissioning in September 2023, as well as Lead Air Defense Planner for NIMITZ CARRIER STRIKE GROUP (CSG 11) during her 2023 Western Pacific deployment.
Ashore, Artem worked on several digital innovation efforts within the Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of the Navy (DoN). In 2020, Artem supported the Undersecretary of Defense (Intelligence) PROJECT MAVEN maritime domain awareness initiative. In 2021, Artem founded the surface fleet’s first dedicated artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics team; he has supported the DoN Secretariat’s AI initiatives since. Most recently, Artem was asked by Commander, U.S. Naval Surface Forces to establish TASK FORCE HOPPER – U.S. Naval Surface Forces’ digital innovation team.
His decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), and various unit, service, and campaign awards. In 2020, he was selected as the U.S. Surface Navy’s Junior Officer Tactician of the Year. He was awarded the Surface Navy Association Literary Award in 2021, for his article “A Fleet without a Rudder.” Artem is also a Shawn Brimley Fellow at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS).
